Noodle soup

The Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) has published its risk assessment with respect to the Fipronil findings in egg products and chicken meat from hens that got in touch with Fipronil contaminated DEGA 16 disinfectant.

The experts came to the conclusion that on the basis of the analytical results and risk assessment for exposure there is currently no risk for no acute health risk to be encountered, neither for adults nor for children. They calculated a max. tolerable daily intake of egg-containing products under three different assumptions for the Fipronil concentration in the product. Taking a worst case scenario with 1,20 mg/kg Fipronil in eggs, the daily max. tolerable amount would be reached for a child (1 year old 10 kg body weight) after eating e.g. 930 g of ice cream per day or 250 g pf pasta (with egg). This sounds indeed rather unlikely.

The meat of hens used for egg production usually might be used for soup only. The findings so far were up to 0,175 mg/kg of Fipronil in the meat. In broiler production so far no Fipronil containing disinfectants have been used. So the risk might be limited to the hen’s meat from egg production farms used for chicken soup manufacturing. It was concluded, that there is no risk for adults and children, as it would mean to eat at least 4.5 kg of this chicken meat/day. So can we give “the all clear” signal again? We do not know yet.

Data for chronic toxicity from intake of small amounts over a long period is not available yet.

For consumer’s sake and as measure of precaution we recommend continuing to monitor egg containing products for the next couple of months for residues of Fipronil and its metabolites.
