ALGAE and ALGAE PRODUCTS

The growing interest in healthy and sustainable nutrition is generating curiosity, especially when experimenting with new types of food.

The current "Healthy Food" trend now increasingly includes algae and food supplements made from them.

However, "novel foods" also raise new questions regarding product safety, origin, authenticity and benefits.

Algae are low in calories, contain high-quality protein and many carbohydrates (polysaccharides), especially dietary fibres. The range of products with algae as a nutrient-rich ingredient is constantly growing. Anyone with an appetite for sea vegetables can get them in sweet fruit bars, in bread, as a spicy cracker, drink, broth or herb mixture, as a ready meal with lentils and cereals, pickled in vinegar and oil, as black or green noodles or as algae oil, which is obtained from microalgae. Algae oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, neutral in taste and a good alternative to fish oil.

The question regarding the hazard potential is justified, as no specific assessment bases are yet available.

WE CURRENTLY RECOMMEND THE EXAMINATION OF ALGAE AND ALGAE PRODUCTS:

  • Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, zinc, copper)
  • Pesticide residues
  • Vitamins
  • Nutritional values Big 8
  • Microbiological parameters (analogue dried herbs)
  • Radioactivity

In our laboratories AGROLAB LUFA GmbH in Kiel (food analysis) and AGROLAB Dr. Verwey B.V. in Barendrecht (analysis of fats and oils - including algae oils! ) qualified and permanently trained laboratory staff comprehensively examine new products for their ingredients and undesirable residues.
