ECHA publishes PFAS restriction proposal

On February 7th, the countries of Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden jointly submitted a proposal to restrict PFAS to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The restriction proposal covers a broad range of PFASs. The details of the proposal have been published on the ECHA website.

 

The proposal aims to reduce PFAS emissions to the environment and make products and processes safer for people. All PFASs falling within the scope of the proposal are persistent. Ground or surface water or soils contaminated with PFAS are technically difficult and costly to clean up. If PFASs continue to be released, they will continue to accumulate in the environment, in drinking water and in our food.

 

With the pre-publication of the restriction proposal and supporting dossiers by ECHA, the dossier evaluation phase begins. In this phase, ECHA's Scientific Committees for Risk Assessment (RAC) and for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) assess whether the proposed restriction meets the legal requirements of REACH before they start evaluating the proposal.
